Teaching

I have been a Visual Art and Design Technology educator for 10 years, working across diverse educational landscapes in the UK, the US, and the UAE with incredible students aged 11-18. My teaching philosophy centres around nurturing globally-minded students to find joy in creating and expressing themselves. More than anything, I love to help students build empathy for others by studying artworks and products made by individuals who walk different life paths. This approach not only expands their understanding of the world but also encourages them to examine problems from someone else’s perspective.

In addition to teaching, I am actively engaged in professional development and collaboration with fellow educators to enhance my teaching methods and share best practices. Many of my teaching resources linked to projects are available on TES. I am passionate about creating an inclusive classroom environment that celebrates diversity and encourages every student to express their voices through Visual Art and Design Technology.

Before embarking on my journey to become a teacher, I dedicated six years to the world of theatre as a Costume Designer and Wardrobe Manager, collaborating with a diverse array of production companies. The skills and insights I gained from working behind the scenes—understanding the importance of collaboration, creativity, and attention to detail—continue to permeate my teaching practice today, allowing me to inspire and engage my students in meaningful ways.

YouTube

Early in my career, I noticed that students often need to see demonstrations a couple of times or be able to access them at their own speed. To respond to this need I created the YouTube channel, Miss Doveys Demos. These tutorials can be utilised in several ways, pre-pandemic I would have them playing whilst providing 1:1 support or set as cover work so students wouldn’t miss out on practical opportunities when with non-specialist teachers. Since the ever-changing classroom environment of the 2020 pandemic, this medium has been instrumental in maintaining my students progress whilst distance learning.
